I’ve finally decided on which reading challenges to participate in this year and I’m honestly a little bit worried! I’m also excited but last year I completely all of my reading challenges and I think it’s because I didn’t really have to work for them at all. I was already reading romance and fantasy and review books and the challenges basically finished themselves. So I wanted some this year that would actually challenge me a little. I’ve also gotten really comfortable in the books I read and haven’t really stretched myself much. I really think the ones I’ve chosen this year will push me a lot as long as I try and stick with them. So here they are, my 2018 reading challenges and goals!
I’m joining in the Back to the Classics Challenge hosted by Books and Chocolate for the first time this year! This one will probably challenge me the most and while there are a total of 12 categories of classics to read from, I’m hoping to get six read. If I get any more than that, I’ll be thrilled! I listed the ones I think I’m going to read on my challenge page, so you can check it out if you’re interested in seeing it. Keep in mind that I NEVER read the classics, hated them in high school, and am really hoping that I can find at least a couple that I will really love.
I’m excited to be participating in the Beat the Backlist challenge hosted by NovelKnight! Last year, I read a bunch of books that I already owned or that had been on my TBR for years and IT FELT SO GOOD. Everybody loves ARCs and reading books the day they’re published and I still plan on reading those but I’m also looking forward to reading books that have been on my list for a long time and finally putting a check by their title! Plus, since I can overlap this with the classics reading challenge and give me even more of a reason to read those really old books!
The Contemporary Romance Reading Challenge is being hosted again by Andi’s ABCs this year and I’m really excited to be participating again! Last year my goal was 21+ Contemporary Romances and I read 40!!!!, so I’m pretty happy with that! I’m going to continue with that same goal and try for another Grand Slam this year. I know this one isn’t really a challenge for me but I still love participating and since there will be very little overlap with this one and my other challenges, I think I will have to make sure I don’t forget about my romances this year!
The Debut Author Challenge is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This is another one that I’ve participated in before. Last year I just barely made it by reading 13. I did DNF a couple but I don’t generally count those for challenges. So I’m going to try again this year to read at least 12 books by debut authors. I really like this challenge because it seems easy but finding new authors of books that interest me can sometimes be really hard! Especially when I like to rely so heavily on reviews from other people. It’s a nice reminder that I need to stick my head out sometimes and try something I might not be totally comfortable with.
I’m really excited that I found this challenge hosted by Doing Dewey! This is another new one for me and will definitely be an actual challenge for me! I almost never read nonfiction books but both my husband and my mom as well as several of my friends read them all the time and are always suggesting books to me so I thought this year could finally be the year that I start reading some of those books! Plus I have several memoirs I’d like to finally get to and I’m hoping this challenge will be the push I need to finally get those read!
I’m participating in the Book Blog Discussion Challenge hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight for the first time this year! I’m so glad I found this one because I’ve been hoping to start working on more discussion type posts. Somewhere along the way, I just got in a huge rut and it has really affected my blogging this year. I’m hoping this challenge will help me focus more on some of the things I really want to talk about and make things interesting again! I’m only challenging myself to 1-10 discussion posts because this is something new for me and I don’t know how it’ll go and also because I know there will be a couple of really busy months for me this year and I don’t want to stress myself out by requiring anything of myself on the blog those months. I’m hoping to be active all year but I’m also trying to be realistic. So I’m going for Discussion Dabbler and will consider anything over that extremely exciting! I don’t have any ideas quite yet so if there’s anything you’d like to see me talk about here, shout it out in the comments!!
I’ve set my Goodreads Reading Challenge to 100 books for the year and I’m really hoping that’s a realistic number for me. I hit 130 this year but it was a huge struggle near the end. I ended up reading a lot of novellas in December. And while I enjoyed that, I also don’t want to spend the whole year worrying about whether or not I’m going to be able to reach that number again, especially if I have a few bad reading months. So I’m lowering it and trying to be slightly less stressed. And I’m really happy with all of my challenges!!!
Are you participating in any reading challenges this year?
