A brand new year is here and that means we all get to start fresh on our reading goals! I set mine for the same as last year, 125 books, which I just barely completed but I’m hoping it’ll help keep me focused and moving forward and not stress me out. If it creates too much stress, I’ll take it down a bit. But we’ll deal with that when we get there. For now, here are the books from December that helped me reach my goal and the ones I’m hoping to read this month!
Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet: I loved the first book in the series that I read last month and was super excited to get approved for the sequel. I read it as soon as I got it and I enjoyed it but didn’t love it as much as the first. This is an adult fantasy/romance series, definitely NOT ya.
Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor: I FINALLY read the finale of this series after having it on my shelf for years. I liked it and always love the characters but didn’t love the story as much as I had hoped.
How to Break a Boy by Laurie Devore: I actually DNF’d this one. It was much too mean girls for me and not enough reform. It might change later on in the book, I only got to about page 120, but that was enough for me. I was definitely bummed about not loving it.
You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando: This one was such a quick read! Really fast paced and interesting. I enjoyed it but I didn’t love it. More thriller than mystery and a few very convenient turns but still a fun read.
The Impostor Queen by Sarah Fine: I’m so glad I finally picked up this book! It isn’t my favorite YA fantasy series yet but I love the characters and CANNOT wait to see how the story continues to play out!
Oklahoma Christmas Blues by Maggie Shayne: I was looking for a short Christmas romance and that’s what I got. But it wasn’t much more than that. Pretty predictable and disappointing. Is it too much to ask for great holiday romances?! (If you have suggestions, I’d love to know them!)
Locke & Key Vol 2 and 3 by Joe Hill: I’m actually really enjoying this series but have to keep waiting for them to become available at my library. If I didn’t have to wait, I’d read all the way through!
Morning Glories Vol 1 by Nick Spencer: I honestly wasn’t a huge fan of this story. I don’t think I’ll continue the series but I can also see why some people really love it. It just wasn’t for me.
Y: The Last Man Vol 1 by Brian K. Vaughan: I love Saga and will try anything by the author. This one is definitely intriguing and I loved reading it but I have a few reservations about how the sexes are treated. So I’m definitely continuing the series but cautiously and hoping that some of my issues get addressed.
This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills and The Hating Game by Sally Thorne: These are two books that I’ve heard a lot of great things about and meant to read last year but just didn’t get to them. So I’m really hoping I can read them this month.
Frostblood by Elly Blake and Simon Thorn and the Viper’s Pit by Aimee Carter: I don’t really know anything about Frostblood yet and I think I’m going to try to keep it that way so I can go in completely blind and just enjoy it. Hopefully. I really liked the first Simon Thorn book and hope its sequel will be just as good.
Love and First Sight by Josh Sundquist and To Catch a Killer by Sheryl Scarborough: These are two more that I don’t know much about but I’m really interested in their synopses and hope they’ll be good.
Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan: Vol 2 & 3: I’m continuing this series and hoping it turns out to be a good decision. Obviously if I hate Vol 2, I won’t read 3 but I already have it from the library so that’s why it’s on the list.
Locke and Key Vol 4 by Joe Jill and Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan: I’m excited to continue Locke & Key and also looking forward to another new series from Vaughan. I hope I love these!
What are you excited to read in January?
