DECEMBER?!?! Ugh. I cannot believe we’re less than 30 days away from 2017. 2016 was kind of a shit-show but it also felt like it flew by. And now everything is Christmas and end of the year and New Year’s and it’s just kind of a hard time of year. It’s a great and beautiful time of year. But busy and hard and stressful. I’m actually feeling okay about where our holiday shopping stands. Now’s it’s just birthdays and cooking and wrapping and decorating that needs to happen. I’m almost glad for the early dark nights because then everyone winds down a bit earlier and it makes me feel like there’s a little bit more time to get things done. Which hopefully also means that there’s more time to read! If I plan everything right, it will all work out and we’ll have a great end of 2016 and I might even be able to get some reading done!
At the end of last month I was behind on my reading challenge. Just by a few books, so I was able to catch up with some graphic novels and novellas I had on hand and had been wanting to read. But then I fell behind again. And now that I’m finally in December, if I want to reach my original goal, I’ll have to finish 11 books this month. Which isn’t impossible, especially if I’m adding in graphic novels. But it just feels like a lot. So at this point, I’m just going to try my best, focus on the books I really want to read, and go from there!
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare and Unwrapping Her Perfect Match by Kat Latham: I absolutely loved Lady Midnight! I was pleasantly surprised by it because I went in knowing I’d both loved and hated previous books of hers. Now I’m dying for the second! UHPM was a free holiday romance novella so how could I pass that up? And it turned out ok! Many things that made me not love it but cute enough to be enjoyable.
Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis and Caraval by Stephanie Gerber: I loved this series by Shalvis and the finale was no different. It’s only three books and a novella so it’s an easy series to get through. I highly recommend it! And Caraval was okay for me. I didn’t love it like so many people are. It was too similar to Wonderland and I spent most of the book not really liking any of the characters. But the ending did bring it back up for me!
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller and A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet: I really enjoyed Daughter but it didn’t blow me away like I was hoping it would. I really enjoyed the moments between Alosa and Riden but I really wanted to just be in love with Alosa as a kick-ass female pirate captain. And I just wasn’t. Fire did completely blow me away! I really wasn’t sure what to expect but people have been loving it so I gave it a chance. And I’m completely hooked! I can’t wait for the next one!
I loved all of these graphic novels and I highly recommend them. Unless you’re under 18 and then I only recommend Locke & Key. The others are definitely not appropriate for the younger crowd!
Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet! I was JUST approved for this one before hitting publish on this post so everything else is getting pushed back and this will be my first read of December! I’m so excited!
The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett by Chelsea Sedoit and How to Break a Boy by Laurie Devore: I’m intrigued by both of these but have seen mixed reviews for both of them as well. So I’m looking forward to reading them but going in with low expectations. I do love the cover on that Devore book, though.
You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando and The Secret of a Heart Note by Stacey Lee: I’m so excited to read both of these! A spy story staring a teenage secret agent!! Who maybe falls in love? I’m sold!! And this is my first Stacey Lee book but I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews for it and the synopsis sounds awesome! It’s about a girl with a little bit of magic that helps others fall in love but won’t fall in love herself because then she’ll lose her magic. But she doesn’t want to be alone. A contemporary romance with magic!! I can’t wait!
Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor: I really want to read this before the year is over so I can find out how the story ends and finally be done with the series! I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to read, especially since I’ve owned it for at least a year, but I have a really hard time finishing series. But I’m going to get to this one before December is over. I promise!
I also plan on reading a few graphic novels I have on hold at the library and a few other things. I need to read 11 books this month to reach my goal for the year. So when I’m done with these, I’ll just be reading whatever I want! I’m looking forward to winter break and getting lots of time to read! I just have to make sure I’m ready for the holidays by then so I can take the time to read and relax!
Did you set a reading goal for this year? Do you think you’ll reach it by the end of the month?
