reading queue

So, usually these are two separate posts but I think we can agree that due to my severe lack of blogging in June, June doesn’t really deserve it’s own post. So I’m just going to give a brief wrap-up here of June, which I promise won’t take long, and then move on to the disaster that was my reading for the month. I’ll try to put a positive spin on that one, though. So here we go:

June Posts

And that’s it. I feel terrible about June and I’m still kind of at a loss for what happened there. It was my worst month posting-wise since I started the blog in March 2012. I’ve never had that few posts. I think I’ve just felt a little burned out these last couple of months and used my vacations and summer break as an excuse. I really hope July will be better, but it’s hard to tell at this point. I’m still keeping up with reading, I’m not burned out on that at the moment, but as far as posts go, I only have a couple scheduled for July. I’m really going to try to make more of an effort this month, though, so I hope I don’t let you guys down!

Now let’s check out the books I read in June, which *spoiler alert* barely followed my TBR from May’s post, and the books I hope to read in July!

June Books

So, I’m just going to come right out admit it up front. I read a lot of graphic novels this month to catch up on my Goodreads reading goal. I have no problem admitting it. I love graphic novels and most of the ones I read had been on my list for a while, I just picked them up in June because I was having a lot of trouble getting caught up and didn’t really have the focus for a lot of books. So here’s what I read last month.

Descender, Vol 1: Tin Stars The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act

Descender Vol 1 by Jeff Lemire and The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen: I just recently found out about Descender but had known about TW+TD for a while and heard lots of good things. But I ended up only liking these ones a little. Their stories were not my favorite, the first was just not really my thing and the second was a little all over the place and hard to follow. I don’t know if I’ll continue with either of these.

Princeless Book 1: Save Yourself (Princeless, Vol. 1) Sex Criminals, Vol. 1: One Weird Trick

Princeless by Jeremy Whitley and Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction: Princeless was awesome. It’s a perfect addition to kid’s graphic novel collections. Both my son and daughter loved it. I loved it for its strong female leads, diversity, fun, and the messages it sends kids without being in your face about it. Sex Criminals is one I learned about at BEA and picked it up because I love Image Comics and wanted to see what it was all about. It was weird. And funny. And weird. I’ll probably continue with it at some point. I’ll definitely read the rest of the Princeless books!

738 Days A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2)

738 Days by Stacey Kade and ACOMAF by Sarah J. Maas: 738 Days was a book I picked up only because I had seen so many people loving it. I didn’t know what it was about so I was a little surprised with how it started but was loving it by the end. Very surprising. ACOMAF also took a little bit for me to get into but by the time everything picked up, I was hooked. I shouldn’t have doubted that but honestly? I almost gave up on this one in the first half.

Frazzled: Everyday Disasters and Impending Doom Ghosts

Frazzled by Booki Vivat and Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier: I loved these two middle-grade novels! The first is not really a graphic novel, there are just a lot of illustrations and doodles throughout the book but I found that they added a lot of interest to the already funny story. I highly recommend this one, especially for worriers who can easily related to Abbie’s struggles. Also, Ghosts is the first book I’ve read of Raina’s but I really enjoyed the sister relationnship and will definitely be looking into more of her books.

The Lovely Reckless A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2)

The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia and A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab: TLR was one of those books I heard a lot of buzz about at BEA and had to grab a copy. When I saw it compared to Katie McGarry’s books, I was sold. Unfortunately, I just didn’t love it as much as I had hoped. It was very similar to other books I’ve read and the writing wasn’t nearly as polished as I had hoped. AGOS was, of course, a great follow up to ADSOM. I love these characters and can’t wait for more!

July Reads

Learning to Swear in America Just a Girl

Learning to Swear in America by Katie Kennedy and Just a Girl by Ellie Cahill: I actually already finished LTSIA and really enjoyed it. Fans of quirky characters will also really enjoy this one. I’m just starting on Just a Girl but really enjoying it so far. That beginning really hooked me! I hope it keeps up!

The Scourge The Vanishing Throne (The Falconer, #2)

The Scourge by Jennifer A. Nielsen and The Vanishing Throne by Elizabeth May: I really don’t know anything about The Scourge except that it’s written by Nielsen so I had to give it a try. And The Vanishing Throne was on my list last month and just didn’t get to it but I’m really hoping to read it this month. I loved The Falconer!

I’m also participating in the Make Me Read It Readathon that starts on the 9th and am letting you guys help me pick what to read! So go check out this post and vote for which published book and which ARC I should read!

Thanks so much! That’s all I have for this wrap-up! I’m hoping to get back to more blogging this month and I do have a couple of really fun tours coming up. So keep an eye out for those. I hope you guys all have a great July and if you’re celebrating the Fourth today, Happy Independence Day!!!!
