An action-packed, romantic, and suspenseful third book in the Altered series.

The Branch is in shambles, but Anna, Sam, Cas, and Nick can't rest easy. Remnants of the organization lurk unseen and the flashbacks to their old lives are only getting stronger--especially Nick's.

Following scattered memories and clues from his Branch file, Nick sets off alone in search of answers and in search of the girl who haunts his dreams. But the sleepy town where she lives in full of secrets and Nick soon learns that uncovering their shared past may have deadly consequences.

I have really enjoyed this series and was so excited when I saw this third book would be from Nick’s POV. If you haven’t read the books yet (and if you haven’t, I recommend that you do), then I’ll tell you that Nick is the bad boy in the group. He has a bad attitude, likes to fight, and is the least willing to talk about anything. He had a difficult childhood which he remembers more and more as time passes. But he still hasn’t recovered all of his pre-farmhouse memories and is secretly obsessed with one specific flashback that shows a girl he can’t remember. So that’s Nick and this book is from his POV. (As well as Elizabeth’s, the girl from the memory.) I was pretty excited to get more insight into Nick and his past and hoped this book would give us a lot more about Nick and his story. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Like the rest of the books in the series, this one was a very quick read and all the characters are full of secrets and you’re never quite sure who you can trust. But unfortunately, I just didn’t like it as much as I did the others. I wasn’t a huge fan of Elizabeth, who’s POV we also get, and there wasn’t as much action as there seemed to be in the others. Not much happened. We do find out about the mission Nick is having flashbacks of, but I really just wanted more of Nick and to learn more about the Branch. And that didn’t really happen. I don’t know why but I just felt like we learned the least and the story advanced the least in this book.

I am glad that Nick found what he was looking for and what the Branch was doing in Elizabeth’s area and how she fit in with it was interesting. As always. I love the idea of the Branch and how terrible they are. I love seeing the boys go after them again and again. But I was really ready to learn everything about the Branch and Nick and the boys and Anna. But it almost felt like this story suffered from second-book-syndrome. Even though it’s the third book, and what I thought the final book, but I have a suspicion after the end of this one that it isn’t. Because as a series ender, it just wasn’t that great. It wasn’t epic and it didn’t provide closure. So I kind of hope they’ll be another book here so that we can get the finality I like in series.

Regardless of everything I mentioned here, my overall love for this series is still going strong and I hope more people will read it. It’s great YA sci-fi and I hope we’ll get more of this story in the future. Even though this one wasn’t epic like I had hoped and didn’t provide as much insight into Nick as I had also hoped, I still really enjoyed it. And I liked getting a new POV. If you’re looking for a really fast sci-fi series with lots of action and a little bit of romance, this is a series you should pick up!

*Edited to add: Apparently there’s a new novella coming out in February that comes right after this book but follows the character Chloe. I’m definitely interested and hope that maybe we’ll even get another full length novel at some point!*
