Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Guys, this is happening! I’m getting ready to start The Lunar Chronicles!! (Finally, I know!) And it feels completely epic. I don’t know why exactly but I think it’s because EVERYBODY loves these books. They’re huge. And everybody’s talking about them right now because the next one just came out. So it feels like a really big deal. And I’m very excited about it. I’m a little nervous too, but I think that’s unavoidable when reading such a popular book and hoping, really hoping, that you aren’t the one that hates it.

(Fingers crossed I don’t hate these books.)

Before I started these books, I wanted a way to record my experience of reading them. That way, if I enjoyed them, I could share my experience with you guys. I know you guys probably won’t care at all, but I just thought it might be fun. So I came up with this Diary of a… thing. I’m hoping to continue this as a feature with other books and movies and anything that might fit. But for now, I’ll be sharing my experience reading Cinder for the first time.

In case you aren’t familiar with the book, Cinder is split into four books, or parts. For these posts, I’ll be writing about Book One and all of my initial reactions to the book for this post and the other three Books and my final feelings in the next post. I hope you’ll stick around for that!

But now, without further ado, here I go. Starting on page 1 of Cinder. (I’m excited! Are you excited?) Ok, good.

And look! It’s so pretty!!!

Okay, I’ve just finished chapters 1 & 2 and I’m ready to share some of my initial thoughts.

First Impressions {Story}:

So far, so good. I’m so excited about this! I appreciate the set up without it feeling like an info dump. The setting at the market was well described and the inclusion of the baker in both how others perceive Cinder and how the plague is affecting the world, was really well done. We get the chance to see why Cinder keeps the fact that she’s a cyborg quiet (also explained through her step-sister) and got a brief explanation for how she came to be where she is. Although I do hope we’ll get more information about her past at some point. How did she become a cyborg and what was she doing before she was adopted? Did she just learn to be a mechanic because she is a cyborg or is there more to the story there? I really like how this has all started, how we got to meet Prince Kai, how we know what’s going on in New Beijing and the world, and how cyborgs fit into everything. But I really just want to know more at this point. And that’s a good thing. It’s too early to know everything!

First Impressions {Characters}:

Cinder: I really like her so far. There’s obviously not much to go on but she seems smart and confident and a little bit defiant. We’ll see as time goes by, but right now, I really like her.
Iko: So great. It seems as if she’ll be the comedic relief. Maybe. It’s a little confusing that she didn’t understand about the foot with Prince Kai but picks up on so many other social cues. Maybe she can only process the most obvious emotions and plays on those. Or something. I don’t know. All I know is that I like her and her social awkwardness. I feel a bit of a kinship with her.
Prince Kai: Ok, does anyone not like him? In two chapters I can already see that he seems kind, sentimental, responsible, and a little sly. He might be completely faking all of it, since there was only that one scene with him, or really be the bad guy, but right now I don’t care. I like him.
Peony: I thought we were suppose to hate the stepsisters but she doesn’t seem like she dislikes Cinder right now. I’m a bit confused with this one. But I think I like her? If nothing else, she’s definitely naive.
The other one whose name I can’t remember but starts with a P: She’s the one I get. We don’t like her. She’s mean and bratty and everything I think of when I think of Cinderella’s stepsisters.
Adri: I don’t like her. Something’s going to happen. Cinder is so sure she won’t volunteer her but I’m not so sure. Especially if the families get paid like P-sister said. I don’t trust her at all. Maybe that isn’t even it. But it’ll be something.

This is how I imagine Adri. Except she’s saying ‘cyborg’ and ‘android’ instead of ‘pretty’ and ‘dog’.

Okay, now I’m going to read more! I’ll be back at the end of the first part of the book.

Thoughts {End of Book One}:

I just finished chapter 8 and I immediately want to read more! I’m already feeling all kinds of emotions. I’m feeling angry for Cinder and where she is now (I knew Adri would do that!), as well as worried. Though it is still early on in the book and we know she doesn’t die, so I’m not sure what’s going to happen. I’m also feeling sad because of what happened at the junkyard and that we seem to have left Iko. I’m hopeful that something awesome will happen soon to get Cinder out of there. I’m curious who this doctor guy is and why he’s so super creepy. (Did he seem creepy to anyone else?) I’m wondering when we’re going to learn more about Queen Levana and Prince Kai. I know there’s more to Queen Levana, though really only because her book is the newest in the series. Otherwise, I wouldn’t really suspect anything about her yet, since most of the focus right now seems to be the plague. I want to know what’s going to happen with Prince Kai and the android he wanted Cinder to fix. Is it some sort of decoy for something else or is something really wrong with it that he doesn’t know about? I want to know when they’re going to see each other again and when we’ll see Kai again. I want to know about Peony. I just really want to keep reading!

I’m so happy right now to be enjoying this! It’s such a great retelling so far. It’s fun catching little parallels to Cinderella but also having it be a great story (so far) all on its own. I really can’t wait to read more and find out some answers to my questions! I hope it won’t be too predictable. (I know it’s a retelling and we already know the story but still, I have some guesses about things, so we’ll see.) I can’t wait to finish it! I hope to see you guys back here for the rest of the book!

And if you guys didn’t know, Marissa Meyer is going on tour! It starts on Tuesday, Jan 27th in Tacoma but you can find the rest of the stops here.

  1. YAY!!! So glad you like it so far. I was nervous about reading it too since it was so popular… and it’s not my normal thing (but then again who’s normal thing is cyborg Cinderella’s??). Iko is my fav. I’m not going to give anything away, but hopefully she’ll come back in the story for ya. Happy reading!!!
