A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.

I loved this book so much. It was so different from what I expected and went places I wouldn’t have thought. With a love triangle in there, I was sure I would hate it. But this was one of those rare times when a triangle was done really really well. I think it helped that romance wasn’t the main focus of this book. And neither of the male interests was either. It was all about Meira finding out who she was and what she could do. I absolutely loved that about this book.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the only thing I loved. I did also love Theron. He almost seemed to come out of nowhere and became this character that surprised me and pleased me every time I saw him. He was definitely not what I expected. Especially considering he was the second male interest to show up and came around because of not great circumstances. I had expected to hate him. But I didn’t. And that was perfect.

I will admit there were times while reading that I wasn’t sure that I would actually like the book. There is a lot to keep track of, eight kingdoms, lots of history, different rulers and magic and alliances and there’s just a whole lot to remember. I wasn’t sure I could keep track of it all but as the book went on we really ended up focusing on just a few kingdoms, so it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Also, when I was learning about the world that Snow Like Ashes takes place in, there were times I rolled my eyes. The capital of Autumn is Oktuber? Eye roll. And they’re all like that. For the four seasons at least. And then when I saw the beginnings of the love triangle, another eye roll. But I can overlook the silly names of the capitals and the love triangle, like I already mentioned, actually ended up being okay. I was very pleasantly surprised by this book over and over again. I can’t wait to reread it before the next book in the series comes out! And I really can’t wait for the next book to come out!! (But don’t worry, there isn’t a crazy cliffhanger either.)

I know I haven’t said much about this book but I don’t want to ruin anything or give anything away. Other than the fact that I ended up loving Theron. That I could tell you about over and over again. I highly recommend this book, especially for fans of YA fantasy. If you liked Throne of Glass, I really think you’ll love this as well. It has a very similar feel with the way the main character is raised and orphaned and wants to fight for what she believes in. She’s not quite as badass as Celaena but she makes up for it in heart and hope. She wants to bring her people back to Winter and she’ll stop at nothing to make that happen. I loved that about her. And I really loved this book. It has everything! Underdogs you’ll root for, rebellion, heart, romance, hope, revenge, magic, and plot twists! I really hope you’ll give this book a try. It’s one of my favorite books of 2014!
